Topic: Disruptions through Data Driven Breeding Will Drive Step Changes in Crop Performance
Abstract:

The world population is predicted to reach 9 billion within the next 35 years, requiring a 70-100% increase in food production relative to current levels. Breeding, which has been responsible for ~50% of historical improvements in agriculture, is one of the key routes through which this increased production, efficiency and sustainability can be delivered. To deliver this though the rates of genetic gain achieved by breeding must be doubled.

Breeding is increasingly viewed as an integrative science that has data science at its core. Advances in genomic sequencing, genome editing, reproductive, robotic and other technologies offer huge potential to drive step changes in crop performance. Untapping the potential of these technologies requires their development and deployment in concert build upon a platform and culture of data science.
