A Complete Solution for Precision Metagenomics: From the Wet Lab to Data Analysis

Precision metagenomics (PM) combines target capture and next-generation sequencing for comprehensive, yet sensitive and quantitative detection of thousands of pathogens and antimicrobial resistance (AMR) markers across diverse applications and sample types. However, implementation of PM workflows has been impaired by a lack of curated databases, complicated workflows, and extensive subject matter expertise required for bioinformatic analysis.

In this workshop, Illumina will present robust PM assays for respiratory (RPIP) and urinary (UPIP) pathogens partnered with powerful, easy-to-use data analysis solutions accessed through a Graphical User Interface (GUI) for easy deployment of PM in research and surveillance applications.

Advanta Genetics will describe their targeted metagenomic Next Generation Sequencing (mNGS) approach utilizing RPIP and UPIP, including performance as compared to commercially available PCR assays. The ability to detect complex polymicrobial infections, often unresolved with traditional microbiology, paired with push-button data analysis led to adoption of PM assays in their clinical research.

As metagenomics and microbiome research continues to expand, it has become more critical to understand both what organisms are present in a microbial community as well as the function of each individual microorganism.

Here we present the current state of microbiome research and the advancements in metagenomic and metatranscriptomic analysis which are revealing the role of microbiomes in a wide variety of disease states, from onset to effectiveness of treatments. A leading service provider with show data from the new 600 cycle flow cell on the NextSeq 2000 provides greater resolution from 16S sequencing experiments while reducing the cost of shotgun metagenomics when identifying the composition of microbiome samples.

For RNA-based sequencing approaches, like metatranscriptomics, we demonstrate the potential to provide direct insights into both the functional activity of actively transcribed genes within a microbial community as well as the microorganisms from which they originate.
