Illumina Single Cell RNA Seq helps advance avian conservation

18 February 2026

Bird conservation relies on culturing primordial germ cells, or PGCs—the cells that become eggs and sperm. While scientists have figured out how to grow chicken PGCs, doing the same for other birds, like pigeons, has been much harder. In this video, learn about how researchers from Colossal Biosciences in collaboration with the University of Connecticut and the University of Edinburgh used Illumina 3' RNA Single Cell Sequencing to analyze the gene expression of thousands of cells to develop an ideal culture medium that supports maintenance and growth of pigeon PGCs. This method relies on Particle-templated Instant Partitions, or PIPs, to process 100s to 100s of thousands of cells for single cell RNA Seq without complicated laboratory equipment or a microfluidic device.
